Partnered for this special event with the Columbia Global Centers|Paris, the Columbia Aging Center continues its Distinguished Lecture Series with this talk by Gerard Karsenty, Paul A. Marks Professor of Genetics & Development, Professor of Medicine, and Chair in Columbia University’s Department of Genetics & Development. Dr. Karsenty received his MD at the Université Paris Descartes (Paris V) and his PhD from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI). A geneticist, he works to understand how organs in vertebrates interact with one another to regulate physiological functions.
In this lecture, Dr. Karsenty will discuss the cell biological and clinical observations that suggest bone functions as an endocrine organ regulating energy metabolism, reproduction, and cognition, all of which decline with age. Specifically, during his talk, he will identify novel functions of the bone-derived hormone osteocalcin and demonstrate the importance of this hormone in countering various manifestations of vertebrate aging, including cognitive decline.
